Baby oil is, generally speaking, an inert oil intended to keep the skin soft and supple. It is often used by babies to keep the skin "baby soft", but is also used by adults for skin care and massage.
Typical components of baby oils are highly purified mineral oil products such as liquid kerosene and petroleum jelly. These compounds are odorless and tasteless, dermatologically tested and approved, non-allergenic, hydrophobic and contain no pesticides or herbicides. No preservatives or antioxidants are necessary, since unlike vegetable oils, there is no risk of rancidity with kerosenes.[3] However, the use of mineral oil in cosmetics is criticized. Natural cosmetics companies claim that the use of mineral oil causes occlusion of the skin. Conventional cosmetic manufacturers and even dermatologists and cosmetic chemists argue against this and studies could not show any statistical difference between kerosene oil and vegetable oils in terms of skin penetration and occlusion.[4][5] In contrast, petroleum jelly-based preparations have been shown to be effective for skin barrier function, even in premature infants.[6] In addition, the use of mineral oil in cosmetics has been criticized.
